Growing Minds: How Deschool and Runnymede PS Partnered for STEM and Sustainability

Dear Educators and School Leaders,

At Deschool, we are dedicated to providing meaningful, customized educational experiences that go beyond traditional classroom learning. Our recent "Planting Seeds of Wellbeing" workshop at Runnymede Public School is a shining example of this commitment. In collaboration with Runnymede Public School, and under the stewardship of Principal Deborah Zamin, we curated a tailored program that bridged STEM education with sustainability, offering students a hands-on journey of discovery. This program highlighted the deep connection between Indigenous education and urban farming, providing a holistic learning experience that nurtured both the mind and the environment.

This workshop, which brought together two extraordinary experts, Jennie Town, our Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, and Sean Smith, the Urban Farmer from Crooked Farmz, offered students the chance to connect with nature, learn about Indigenous traditions, and practice sustainable farming techniques. It was truly a partnership of STEM education and environmental stewardship, crafted specifically for Runnymede’s students.

A Customized STEM and Sustainability Partnership

The "Planting Seeds of Wellbeing" workshop was uniquely designed to meet the specific needs and interests of Runnymede’s students. Through interactive sessions and hands-on activities, students gained a deeper understanding of Indigenous knowledge and sustainable farming practices. The program was more than a workshop; it was a STEM and Sustainability partnership, aiming to spark curiosity and instill important life lessons about environmental responsibility and cultural appreciation.

Highlights from the Workshop:

Engaging with Indigenous Knowledge: Under the expert guidance of Jennie Town, Deschool’s Indigenous Knowledge Keeper, students were immersed in the richness of Indigenous traditions. They participated in activities such as singing traditional traveling songs, engaging in interactive storytelling about the Three Sisters planting, and experiencing a smudging ceremony for purification. Jennie’s approach brought cultural significance to every lesson, helping students form a meaningful connection to their heritage and the natural world.

Exploring Urban Farming: Sean Smith, the Urban Farmer from Crooked Farmz, introduced students to the fascinating world of urban farming. They learned about soil health, the vital role of microbes, and the importance of composting. Under Sean’s guidance, students planted vibrant Rainbow Garden troughs filled with vegetables, herbs, and flowers, learning about biodiversity, sustainability, and the role of urban gardens in today’s world.

Hands-On Activities: The students didn’t just observe—they actively participated in the creation of their school garden. They prepared garden troughs and planted a variety of crops, including the Three Sisters—corn, beans, and squash. These activities reinforced the interconnectedness of these staple crops and their significance in Indigenous culture, teaching students about sustainability, cooperation, and the balance of nature.

Tailored to Runnymede PS

This program was specially curated for Runnymede Public School to align with the school’s goals of fostering STEM learning and environmental stewardship. Principal Deborah Zamin worked closely with Deschool to ensure that this workshop not only met the curriculum needs but also inspired students to think creatively about sustainability, science, and cultural respect. It was truly a collaborative effort, blending education with hands-on experience to cultivate both knowledge and care for the environment.
